 the final day

well, everything went just fine. relatively stress-free. dad & linda were good visitors... low-maintenance and laid-back.

this afternoon dad & i went to the driving range and smacked a bucket of balls around. i hadn't taken the golf clubs out of the garage all season, so it was nice to get back into the swing of things, so to speak.

later we played more mexican train, and dad & linda left us with a set of dominoes of our own so we could keep practicing.

then we went to a durham bulls game with lisa, where ray got chosen do to one of those goofy between-inning games (8.3 MB .mov) -- three guys were tag-team rolling along the first base line in competition with three guys (one of them ray) who were rolling along the third base line. ray brought his team to victory depite a terrible performance by the middle roller.

after the game (bulls lost) we said goodbye to dad and linda; they're leaving first thing in the morning. i told them sincerely that it was nice hanging out with them, then dad said, "i feel like i have a daughter again." that's something that might have the potential to make me cry if it didn't immediately make me feel so much guilt.

anyway, they're gone now and the trip was MUCH better than i'd anticipated.

Good for you and the fam to have good things together. And holy shit, good for Ray. You can see the other team rolling in the background, and their third leg guy must have been even worse than Ray's second leg guy. Still, Ray completely rocked! Or, um, rolled.

i'm glad that the visit went so well. they seemed like nice people.

Glad you had a nice time.

I went to the driving range this weekend too for the first time this season. Can you tell me how it's possible to miss a ball that ISN'T moving? I cut down on my back swing and that helped me make contact more often but SHEESH...how embarassing!

Wacky, isn't it; the eerie ability dad has to communicate so little in general, but then to say so much with one comment like that. Hard to know whether that comment was meant to be an indictment of you, an indictment of him, or just an offhand observation. I've gotta say, it kinda makes me mad, though. It's a two-way street, dammit.

Oh, and lainey, Gary McCord says that what makes golf so hard is that the ball is not moving. Personally, I think that what makes Gary McCord so hard to understand is that he's full of $@%&.

rob-
dad made that comment AGAIN this morning when he called to let me know they'd successfully gotten on the road.

i'm sure his intentions are sincere and loving... but i wish he could have found another way to vocalize his appreciation of reconnecting with me. there are surely better words...

yeah.... an artful wordsmith he ain't. I'm glad you feel that way about his intentions. I can totally hear him making that comment - sounds like he must've struck a chord inside himself somehow with that one, given that he repeated it to you.

Good job, Christa. I'm increasingly thinking it's worth putting up with a little bullshit to have a better relationship with my parents.

Only a little, though!
