we went to home depot to buy a new vacuum cleaner. on the way to the vacuum aisle in i spotted a big pile of clearance merchandise. an odd assortment of stuff: lamps, drills... and this pool. it was marked WAY down to $99.
i think the only reason it was on clearance was that the box had basically disintegrated. it seemed like all the parts were there, so without any real discussion on the matter --just a "wow!" and a "let's do it!" and a "why the hell not??"-- ray and i loaded the thing into our cart and we sped home.
(we did manage to buy a vacuum cleaner, too, by the way... also for $99. i believe i will get more satisfaction out of the pool.)
the filling process took much took longer than we wanted it to, and ray really wanted to get in as soon as there was the tiniest puddle in the bottom of the pool, but it's all filled now... and i can't wait to get in tonight!
woo!!

Posted by: Sarah at August 22, 2005 3:53 PMthere's a theory afoot that mosquitoes don't like chlorinated water.
i was at an outdoor pool last weekend and wasn't bothered by them...
plus, we have a cover. when we're not using the pool, the water is totally covered.
Posted by: christa at August 22, 2005 4:10 PMword to the wise: watch out for the cover filling with rain water. some people down the road from us have one of these pools, and they've left it half-inflated and covered sitting in their front yard for weeks. The cover filled up with rainwater and it gets more disgusting every time we drive by. I'm sure it's a fairly active mosquito farm by now.
Maybe after it rains you just need to shake the water out of the cover or something.
please, please tell me that the pool comes complete with a muscular, tan man (as shown in the photo).
Posted by: lisa at August 22, 2005 6:40 PMThat group of people in the photo of the pool strike me as odd. They don't look like a family but yet they don't have a friends vibe either. It's like Mr. Muscles has some babes in there and also the neighborhood kids. What IS going on? And what will happen later? And will anything similar happen to Christa and Ray?
Posted by: Marianne at August 22, 2005 9:15 PMThat is one fun impulse purchase! I'm totally envying your backyard right now. Let me know exactly how fun it is. I'm a swimming pool junkie. I can't me enough that backyard swimming.
Posted by: Becky at August 22, 2005 10:31 PMi was in the pool tonight for approximately 4 hours! i am totally shriveled up, from head to toe. but it was great fun!
ray made a full dinner (grilled steak, asparagus, mushrooms), then cut it all up into bite-sized portions and floated it in the pool to me, mary & lisa on top of a boogie board. we also had wine spritzers. all in all, a perfect evening!
Posted by: christa at August 22, 2005 11:36 PMhee hee! very cute.
though the family freaks me out.
hey, speaking of bite-sized portions -- whole foods had some pretty big cubes of marinated and grilled pork and t-bone on saturday night. mmmm.

Posted by: Joseph H. VIlas at August 24, 2005 11:25 PMi feel i must add that i tried out our new $99 vacuum cleaner last night, and it totally kicked ass. it was easy to put together, and sucked up a ton of crap.
on the other hand, the pool has not been so easy. getting the pH balanced is difficult, and we've had trouble locating what must be a slow leak somewhere.
still, being in the pool is FAR more relaxing than vacuuming. but vacuuming doesn't make my skin pruny.
