 name that toy

last night mary and i were reminiscing about toys from our childhood. it took me hours to remember the name of the thing over there at the right, with the canisters and ropes. it came to me just as i was falling asleep. (do you remember what it's called?)

we also both have very fond memories of the lemon twist... when she said those words we both jumped up and mimicked the jumping action.

currently i'm struggling to remember the name of a riding toy that we had as kids. you sit on a big platter between two big wheels, each with a little nub of a handle. you can move the wheels the same way and travel forward, or turn one wheel forward and one backward and turn in circles. it's similar to a big-wheel, but this thing gets power from your arms. anyone remember its name?

i wish this site were a little more organized... i feel like my answer may be there somewhere.

Was it a sit 'n spin?

Posted by: John Boy at September 30, 2005 10:46 AM

I loved Space Hoppers when I was a kid, and trampolines! Just a bouncy girl

Posted by: Marianne at September 30, 2005 10:59 AM

no, sit ' spin was a disc you sat on, legs indian-style... then you turned another disc to spin yourself into sickness. (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?dest=9999999997&product_id=3989353&sourceid=0100000030660804602498 )

the thing i'm trying to describe is more of a vehicle than an illness-inducer.

I've never seen that toy. What's it called?

Posted by: lainey at September 30, 2005 12:07 PM

I think it's called a Krazy Kar...

Haven't seen one in the past decade; the cup walkers we see all the time, though, you can still get them. (Nell's preschool had about a dozen sets, the kids dug them.)

penny! that's it! i don't remember it being called a krazy kar, but that's definitely the thing we were talking about. whew! mystery solved.

lainey-
the toy that's pictured is called "romper stomper". i LOVED my set of them. i'm surprised i didn't break my neck, though... it's easy to get tangled up, trip and fall. whee!

and marianne... i've never heard of space hoppers. oh, but wait -- these are what you're talking about? http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/pages/garden-games6a.htm
we americans call those hippity hops. and i loved that toy, too.

Oh man, I always thought that thing was called a Crazy Wheel. Or a Krazy Wheel, since it's crazier to use a K. My older sister Katherine loved that thing. Hers was red and yellow like this:

But I was too young for that. I could only operate my inchworm while Katherine had graduated to a pogo stick. http://www.feelingretro.com/view_toy.cfm?id=89

Then I finally got a Big Wheel, but I never got a Green Machine.

I gotta dig through my mom's photos and get some pictures of us on these things!

Romper Stomper!

Last night I dreamed I was visiting with a client who had a shelf full of old toys in his office. Among them, a modified Rock'Em Sock'Em (sp?) with monsters instead of blocky boxers.

We made our own Romper Stompers with coffee cans and string. Does that mean we were poor, or resourceful? Maybe both.

My kids had a toy like the Lemon Twist called Skip-It. Now I think they have ones that light up and/or make noises. Maybe the one we had had a counter on it, but I'm not sure about that.

It was absolutely a Crazy Car. I LOVED mine.
And romper stompers hurt your feet as I recall.

Yes, a Space Hopper is a Hippity Hop! I thought you Yanks would be more into the space monikers than Brits, but no...

Posted by: Marianne at September 30, 2005 08:44 PM

that ball/cup on a line with the thing around your ankle was not called a Lemon Twist where I come from.
I tried to describe that thing, the other day, to Middle, and was laughing so hard I cried.

I thought the name of it was "Whiz Wheel". Maybe I'm thinking about the wrong thing. Does anyone remember that flat toy that has a swirl mechanism inside and you shoot the marbles round and round from a pin-ball like coil shooter? The game is really loud while the marble is going around the swirl. I think the object is to make it drop right in the center after swirling around 8 times or so. The harder you shot the marble, the faster it went. Any help would be appreciated! Amy

It was a Krazy (Crazy) Kart (Cart)! There is a catalog which carries them, that I mistakenly threw out and now am searching everywhere!

It was called the Crazy Wheel. I have told my kids about this toy and how cool it was. I wish that they would come out with it again. I don't remember who made it, but I have been trying to find out and have been sending e-mails to toy makers in order to tell them that this thins=g would be a hit, not only for the many of the kids in world that can walk, but the ones who use wheels all day long. What a joy it would be to get out of a chair and get CRAZY. I'm even thinking of making one for myself.

Still just a kid......

Hey, the toy was called the KRAZY KAR by MARX. You will not believe this you can still buy it at Sears. Check the toy section online and type in KRAZY KAR. BEST, and I MEAN BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER, your kids will never forget this toy....

Posted by: Shannon at December 19, 2005 11:39 PM

I didn't have a lemon twist, but had something similar called a jingle jump.

Posted by: Lorrie at January 21, 2006 11:25 PM

Can you still buy an original Lemon Twist these days? I've just got to get myself one again. I might be grown, but I'd still play with it. It was so much better than the cheap knock-off they sell today. The rope was very flexable, not all stiff like the ones today.

So...where can I locate one to purchase?

Posted by: Susie at June 22, 2006 02:23 PM

I recall the Krazy Kar (my favorite all time toy)and there is a site that still sells them. I went through 3 of them as a kid. www.backtobasicstoys.com Infact you will find many of our childhood toys there. You can also see the original colors of the Karzy Kar on www.feelingretro.com Hey does anyone remember the footsie? I still have mine. Do you remember what it is? It was a girlie toy :-)
