I looked at this for 5 minutes and I still don't get it. I haven't been to church in a while so maybe that's the reason.
Posted by: SGTB at December 14, 2005 11:55 PMWere people maybe parking (illegally) in front of the sign (with giant SUVs), making it hard for folks coming afterwards to see that the church was there? And isn't it a traffic hazard to post such cryptic requests where drivers can become distracted?
Posted by: Penny at December 15, 2005 01:43 AMthis is seriously starting to approach the sign outside Rev. Lovejoy's church on the Simpsons, where a couple of weeks ago the sign read "stop stealing our letters"
Posted by: georg at December 15, 2005 11:55 AMwell, the truth of the matter is, had i taken this photo a day earlier it would have made perfect sense.
as you can see, the road that runs by the church has been under construction. the construction crew had piled a big mound of dirt right in front of the sign, and in a move that totally cracked me up, the owner of the sign posted a message TO the dirt.
"dirt, please don't block the sign." that's what it said to me. i mean, the sign was facing the mound of dirt, and the dirt was facing right back at it. it was a classic standoff.
i guess the dirt finally backed down, though, because it was gone when i drove by the following day.
that'll teach me to ALWAYS carry a camera with me.

I was hoping you'd explain --
I had all kinds of religious connotations running through my head.
maybe the dirt didn't back down (standing its literal ground). instead, maybe jesus smote it.
but why didn't the church itself just pour its river of joy on the dirt and thus wash the dirt away?
Can god make a pile of dirt in front of a sign so big that he can't move it?
