i got a call late yesterday afternoon from kingsford: my windows were in! they could come install them the next day.
so i'm home today, 'supervising' the installation. in truth, all i'm doing is trying to console the cats, who are freaked out beyond belief.
here's ryan (one of a three-man team) sweeping out debris after he took the first window out.
this is the absence of a window.
by noon they'd already had the two side windows installed.
even better, the wall construction has taken another large leap with the installation of the super-tall support posts. brick and mortar must be imminent. they must be.
good stuff!
Posted by xta at February 2, 2006 01:16 PM | TrackBackLooks great! I'm so excited for you...the biggest home improvement we ever do involves IKEA or paint, nothing as cool as new windows.
Posted by: lainey at February 2, 2006 05:00 PMThis is extremely cool. I'm so envious - you own a home to buy windows FOR!
Posted by: Gidge at February 2, 2006 08:53 PMThe first thing that I noticed when I had my windows replaced was how much quieter (what's the rule with quiet? more quiet? quieter? - god, I used to be a teacer!!!) How about you? Less outside noise? How are those drafts? Must be a huge improvement over those roll-out things. I lived in a house in CH with roll outs in and put plastic over the windows in the winter. It looked like a trailer, but it was much warmer - those roll out windows are for Hawaii.
Posted by: John Boy at February 3, 2006 01:38 AMwell, the job's not done yet, john. they left about 6 windows to do... including the two huge (126"!) windows, which likely let in the most sound/cold. it's hard for me to make a full assessment until they're done.
it's taking them a LONG time to get each window out. these old aluminum things are set *into* the brick and apparently it's hard to free the window without breaking the glass. they're being careful, but careful = slow.
they say they'll be done today... they think.
Posted by: christa at February 3, 2006 07:52 AMHey Xta, I have window guys at my house today too! I'm just getting panes replaced (dual-panes where the seal failed), not whole window replacements, though. Still not cheap, but cheapER.
Posted by: minty at February 3, 2006 09:31 AMi think the rise in natural gas prices is causing a lot of people to weatherproof. the victorian at the corner of lynch & mangum (not the huge lavendar one, the yellow one with the white picket fence) is getting vinyl windows today, too.
Posted by: lisa at February 3, 2006 10:15 AMHow nice that the weather has been mild while they open your house to the air!! What great timing! :) One thing I liked about our new windows was that then I could open up for fresh air at any time of the year, which helped the indoor airquality tremendously. (Previously, only 2 out of 9 awning windows would even open.)
I did notice the noise-dampening. Even to the degree that even in pleasant weather, I'd close the bedroom window facing the wonderful main drag side of the house to avoid being woken up by race cars flying up the road at 4 am! Even with another window open, it made that much of a difference.
Oooo! I'm so excited for you!! :)
